The Drama Never Ceases in Kogi

The lingering face-off between the Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, and Senator Dino Melaye assumed another condescending twist during this year’s Kabba Day celebration, writes Yekini Jimoh.
The political tussle between the Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello and the Senator representing Kogi West senatorial district, Dino Melaye resurfaced recently during this year’s Kabba Day celebration, which took place at Kabba township stadium. The annual festival was organised by the Kabba Development Association to celebrate the people of Kabba and also to raise funds for the union.
It is an annual event that brought home the who-is-who in the state, including those in the diaspora. The event usually unites the people of the ‘Owes’. From politicians, doctors, businessmen and women, market women and students – they all see the event as the only thing that brings joy and happiness to the community.
Thus, this year’s event was quite colourful as the people trooped out in their thousands to witness the occasion.
Among the prominent indigenes invited to the event included the paramount ruler of Ife, the Oni Ife, Oba Enitan Adeyeye Ogunwusi, Ojaja II; Governor Bello and Senator Melaye; a member of House of Representatives, Hon. Tajudeen Yusuf and Hon. James Faleke; the Speaker, Kogi State House of Assembly, Hon. Yomi Matthew Kolawole and other national and state assembly members and traditional rulers, among other dignitaries.
Different traditional dancers also partook of the event with colour, donning the venue that was filled to the capacity.
Melaye arrived at the venue at about 1pm with hundreds of his supporters dancing to the traditional music provided by the locals. But before the event proper, Thisday reliably gathered that some traditional rulers from his area had visited the Senator and told him not to come for the event.
According to the Speaker, Kolawole, if Senator Dino Melaye had listened to the advice of the elders by not attending, there would not have been any reason for thugs to capitalise on his presence to unleash terror on the field.
“Senator Dino Melaye attended the Kabba Day last Saturday against the advice of the traditional rulers and Okun Elders Council,” he lamented.
According to a source close to the traditional rulers, Dino was advised to avoid anything that would bring problem as the governor was expected to grace the occasion. Dino was also asked to advise his supporters to stay away from trouble.
At the end of the meeting, Dino promised not to do anything that would disrupt the occasion, reminding them he was a sitting senator. However, from the meeting, he proceeded to the venue, where he was welcomed by his supporters.
Thisday learnt that after his arrival at the venue, some hours later, some of the organisers approached and informed the Senator that the governor was already in Kabba but lodged at one of the hotels in the town.
According to the sources, the governor categorically told the organising committee that he would only come to the venue if the Senator was not there.
After this was brought to his notice, he allegedly promised to listen to them. But minutes later, he was called to the podium to present his speech and donation, which he did and at the end of his speech he donated N3million naira and left.
As he was approaching his Bullet proof Mercedez sport utility vehicle, to make way for the arrival of the governor, some thugs from nowhere attacked him with objects such as stone, sachet water and other dangerous objects.
He lost the windshield of one of his cars to the attack as the venue suddenly turned to a theater of war. The security agents on the other hand did everything possible to bring the ugly situation under control.
Dino at this time was able to zoom out of the venue in his car due to the quick response of his security aides.
But for obvious security reasons, Bello who was already in Kabba for the programme failed to turn up at the venue even though his advance party was already on ground before the attack.
Melaye was duly invited for the event just as the governor but their long standing feud played out and marred the celebration as many dignitaries scampered to safety.
Bello, in a swift reaction, said he took a proactive step to avert an impending chaos that would have resulted in the loss of lives and property at the event.
Spokesperson to the governor, Mrs. Petra Akinti Onyegbule, noted that the governor’s inability to make a scheduled appearance at Kabba Day was to prevent the possible insurrection that could have disrupted the peace of the event.
“The alleged attack on Dino Melaye by some aggrieved Kogi west youths would have been worsened if the governor was present at the event”, saying as the father of the state, the governor decided to stay off to avert further violence.
“As the chief security officer of the state, whose job is to ensure the protection and safety of lives and property of the citizens, Governor Bello is committed to making sure that the onerous task of ensuring the safety of the entire citizens was never compromised,” she stated.
She hinted that the governor had said it many times that no single life is worth being lost for any political misunderstanding.
“If my appearance would hurt anyone, I would rather stay away and let everyone be at peace. Kogi is for all of us, and together we shall build the state of our dream.”
The governor, however, urged the youths to shun any act of violence that could disrupt peace across the state, stressing that every life is important to him irrespective of who is involved.
Responding too, Melaye told newsmen that he was attacked by men he claimed to have been sent by the Kogi State government.
“Two out of the Ebira boys that attacked me in Kabba on Saturday were sent by Kogi State Government but were arrested by the Police but later granted bail following the intervention of the state apparatus. The thugs from Kogi Central were led by a member of Kogi State House of Assembly, Hon Abdullahi Bello,” he alleged.
He stated that his superlative outing at the occasion had angered the governor and his entourage, adding that the thugs also invaded his constituency office, in Kabba, shooting sporadically, in apparent belief that he was at the building to commission the facility.
People who spoke to Thisday on the development were of the view that the event should have brought the governor and the Senator together and make peace in the interest of the state.
According to them, what happened in Kabba was a strong indication that 2019 general election in the state may not be peaceful considering the chain of ugly political events around the state.

Kogi: Yet Another Salary-related Death

Midday, Sunday, November 5, another victim was added to the long list of casualties of the non-payment of salaries by Kogi State government. The addition, Zacchaeus Akinola Maliki, a highly committed civil servant, until his death worked with the Kogi State Local Government Pension Board. He was owed over 22 months in salary arrears before he died – an act which made it difficult for him to access medication early enough for the phenomenon that eventually shut up the entire lung.
After struggling without success to buy some of the drugs prescribed for his ailment, he opted for the local herbs which were, by far, relatively cheap. All through his ordeal as an unpaid worker, he depended on siblings, well-wishers and friends to survive. When his condition became worse, his family members were informed and he was immediately taken to Kabba Specialist Hospital, where they spent fortunes on tests and medical examinations.
After weeks in the hospital, he was referred to Federal Medical Centre, Lokoja, in the state capital where it was discovered that one of his lungs was filled with fluid.
From FMC, Lokoja, he was referred to Specialist Hospital Gwagwalada for further medical examination. The new test revealed a need for another major surgery in the lungs. He died four days after the surgery.
The most devastating in the entire scenario is the fact that the family sent an SOS to the state government in the hope that some of his salary arrears would be paid to enable him carry out the surgery in good time. And an emissary of the state government, led by a young lady, visited the family members in the hospital. According to her, the mission of her team was to confirm that Akinola Maliki was a genuine worker of Kogi State government. She promised to come back but they never did. And so he languished on hospital bed at FMC Lokoja, for additional three months after their visit.
And now, he is dead without being given an opportunity to be screened as his parastatal was totally excluded from the screening exercise. Hundreds of his colleagues in the pension board are wallowing in pain and hunger and Kogi State government appears to be watching patiently to see them die one after the other.

Kabba Day Fracas: Elders, Chiefs Apologises to Gov. Yahaya Bello

Monarchs and elders from Kabba has apologised to Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello over “regrettable actions of Senator Dino Melaye” during the last Kabba Day celebrations.
During a visit to the Governor on Thursday, Kabba Development Union (KDU) led by Kabba Traditional Council tendered their profound apologies and commended the wisdom of the Governor in dousing tension on said day.
In a letter of appreciation signed by Emmanuel Ajibero, Chairman Kabba Day Planning Committee, the elders thanks Governor Bello for his magnanimity.
“Your presence in Kabba on that day, in spite of various wrong signals hovering in the air, clearly demonstrated to us your love for us in Kabba and indeed and the entire Okun Nation. For this, we remain eternally grateful. We also thank you for your handsome donation of N20,000,000 (Twenty Million Naira) towards the completion of our Ultra Modern Kabba Civic Centre. This magnanimity is unprecedented!
“Your Excellency, as an inherent part of the cultural ethos of the Kabba people, we do not condone any form of disrespect to our Elders and Leaders, more so to our Esteemed Governor. When we observed some unguided tantrums being publicised on Social Media, our Traditional Rulers sent a delegation of three Obas to dissuade some hitherto invited individuals from attending the event and this includes Sen. Dino Melaye.
“For avoidance of doubt, again, on the day of this event, which is a non-political but cultural and fund-raising gathering, our two Ololus in the company of some community Leaders pleaded, particularly with politicians we suspected may have ulterior motives, that they must exhibit perfect decorum before and/or during the Celebration; the request to which we received requisite assurances of guaranteed civility.
“We however regret with profound apologies, the inconveniences and embarrassment that occured on that day, whilst also appreciating your courage and maturity in handling the situation – that could potentially have escalated beyond control. However, lessons have been learnt and these will guide our planning in the course of organising such worthy events in the future,”he said.
Governor Bello, who expressed his happiness to receive the royal fathers and elders noted that apologies and appreciation are not needed as whatever happened during the Kabba Day belonged in the past.
He said the most important thing is how we move on from there for the progress of the State.

The last may not have been heard of the Kabba Day drama as Royal Fathers and Community Leaders of the ancient town insisted Sen. Dino Melaye was told to stay away from the event.
Speaking during a courtesy call on Governor Yahaya Bello in Lokoja, Thursday, the President General of the Kabba Development Union, Engr. Emmanuel Ajibero hailed the Governor for his “wisdom and statesmanship”, insisting that the Governor’s decision to tow the path of peace shows he is a “peace loving leader”.
The President thanked the Governor for donating 20 million naira towards the completion of the Kabba Civic Center.
Also speaking at the event, a community leader, Chief Olowodola said Kabba Community will remain “eternally grateful” to the Governor for his “uncommon leadership”, saying he thought Sen. Dino would use the opportunity to iron out his differences with the Governor.

On his part, the Obadofin of Oweland, HRH Oba Michael Yusuf thanked the Governor for honoring the Kabba people as well as embracing peace. He narrated how the Community prevailed on Sen. Dino Melaye to stay off the event.
He said, “We sent some Royal Fathers and Chiefs to him to stay away when we heard he was coming to disrupt the event. He promised us he won’t come only to sneak into Kabba and caused the havoc that happened that day.
“We have learnt our lessons and we now know better. The event also afforded us the opportunity to know how peace-loving the Governor is”..
The Chief of Staff to the Governor, Hon. Edward Onoja called on the Governor to continue to see the Okun people as responsible despite what happened at the Kabba Day.
According to him, “Okun land is made up of responsible and great people. The sin of one should not be visited on all.
“Since the creation of Kogi State, Kogi has never been this favored in terms of appointment into strategic and high placed positions. Okun must prove to the Governor and the current administration that they appreciate their new found relevance in the the politics and governance of Kogi State.
“The Kabba Day incident has helped the Governor to shine. People were expecting to see an arrogant Governor as misconceived by the media only to find out the real Yahaya Bello who is prepared to sacrifice anything to safeguard the lives of his people.
“There is no Administration in this state in which the Okun people have the positions of a Speaker, Secretary to the State Government and State Security Adviser all at the same time. It has been made possible by this administration. We know where we are coming from, where we are and where we are going”.
Responding, the Governor, Alh Yahaya Bello thanked the Members of the delegation for their visit.
Bello said he bears no grudge against anyone and that he will continue to respect the position of Kabba as the headquarters of the old Kabba Province.
“I do not bear grudge against anyone. What happened belongs to the past. I cannot waste the lives of my people on the platter of ego. We thank God for making the day a success.
“Let me also thank my supporters for showing the character of their leader by refusing to take laws into their hands. The security agencies also did great by providing adequate security to forestall breakdown of law and order.
“Kogi State is one big family and my administration shall continue to promote peace and unity across the state”.
The Governor urged the Kabba people to continue to support his administration in his bid to continue to serve the people of the state.
