“The events surrounding the unfortunate death of the late civil servant, Soje, is enough to prove to Governor Bello and the aides beclouding his sense of judgement need fervent prayers to deliver him and the government from bondage.
“No wonder the ‘Nigeria Prays’ event, under the leadership of General Yakubu Gowon, has scheduled a prayer meeting for Kogi in order to court the favour of God in the state.
Ejiga, while noting that comments about the Bello-led administration in the public domain is unpalatable, he stressed that Bello needs prayer to enable him succeed in governing the state.

God so love Kogi state that he brought Senator Dino Melaye to save his people

“For God so love Kogi state that he brought forth Senator Dino Melaye to save his people from the hands of hunger, poverty and inhumane administration headed by Yahaya Bello and co”
This singular act yesterday at the senate chambers, where you moved a motion for the donation of bags of rice to Kogi state workers who have been forced into an unholy romance with hunger and poverty courtesy of the non- payment of their salaries spanning up to 20 months, has distinguished you among the various yahoo-yahoo politicians that have infested the land of Kogi.
This motion of yours has led to the donation of thousands bags of rice by your colleagues in order to salvage the plight of the ordinary Kogi state workers and prevent further suicide been committed.
This act of yours has proven to many that there are still politicians with the heart of Gold and are sent by God to salvage mankind from the hands of modern day political Pharoahs and Ahabs.
No wonder the devilish politicians are after your mandate!
Indeed, the people of your constituency have proven to us that they know who is the best and always present the best. You are indeed the best.
The greatest virtue in the life of man is feeding the hungry, clothing the naked and you have done the just that.
Kogites will remain forever grateful to you, we owe you more than mere words.
How I wish I can call you His Excellency, Governor Dino Melaye.
Just as Oliver Twist, we shall always ask for more – like a legislation prescribing punishment for states who deliberately refuse to pay salaries.
God will surely bless your efforts toward re-positioning the Nigeria polity.

Gov Bello is a Blessing to Kogi – Smart Adeyemi

Convinced that if past administration’s in the state had not engaged in mindless looting and mismanagement of the resources that accrued to the state in their  time, Kogi would have been a pride to its citizens as well as envy to others.
He glowingly described the state  Governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello as a blessing to the state, stressing that whether critics agree or not, Kogi is fast regaining its lost fortunes and glory under the present  administration.
Senator Adeyemi said this yesterday during the inauguration of the newly  constituted, Kogi elders advisory committee, at the Government House, Lokoja.
He bemoaned the level of underdevelopment and corruption that prevailed in the state before the coming of present administration, alleging that past administrations in the state deliberately institutionalised corruption, where they milked the state dry.
“We must thank God for giving us a Governor who is so passionate about  the development and unity of the state. If we have had a Governor like this before now, Kogi would have become an envy of all eyes”, he said.
While commending the development strides of the present  administration, especially in the area of massive infrastructural turn  around, he disclosed that what the government need at the moment is the support and patience of the people.
He said issues of salary is a national challenge, not peculiar to Kogi, saying that the state government has shown enough commitment to overcome it.
Of particular interest to him, he pointed out, is the ongoing agricultural revolution in the state, revealing that the investment in rice production at Omi Dam, would not only place the state on the map of rice producing states in the  country, it would also change the fortunes of its people.
He appealed to government to urgently address complaints of salaries payment, saying that the genuine workers should not be allowed to suffer unjustly with unintended beneficiaries.
He, however, lauded the courage and political will of government in pursuing the reform of the civil service, revealing that, the civil service was used in the past as ‘conduit pipe’, to drain  the resources of the state.
Senator Adeyemi who is a member of the state elders advisory committee, urged the people of the state to jettison their ethnic, religious or ideological differences and support the government to succeed in its determination to place the state on the path of sustainable socio- economic development.

Cherubim And Seraphim Prophet Kills Lady For Rituals In Ogun

Adejoke Adeleye/Abeokuta

The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a prophet of the Cherubim and Seraphim Church and his accomplice for allegedly killing a woman for money-making rituals.

The prophet, Darasimi Rotimi and his accomplice, Ibikunle Sunday were paraded on Tuesday before newsmen at the state police headquarters Eleweran, Abeokuta, by the state commissioner of police Iliyasu Ahmed.

The suspects allegedly killed one Sara Olowokere at Ijoko, Sango and removed her body parts including head, wrist, heart, breast and private part for money-making rituals.

Ahmed told newsmen that the suspects killed her and “dissected her body before burying her remains at Alafia street, off Alagbole, Ijoko.

The second suspect, Sunday, a 40-year old Okada rider, confessed to our reporter that he killed the victim by hitting a plank of wood on her head.

“I hit a plank of wood on her head. When she died, we now shared her parts. I took her head to Ogo-eri and Darasimi (referring to the Prophet) took the other parts of the body away. They said the parts are essential ingredients for money-making rituals,” he confessed.

He added that the deceased was the girlfriend of the third suspect who is still on the run.

But the prophet from Cherubim and Seraphim Church, Ijoko, denied involvement in the act.

“Don’t mind him. He is just lying. If you commit an offence and confess your sin, God will definitely forgive you. I regret my action. I hope the government will temper justice with mercy,” Prophet Darasimi pleaded.

“I don’t know anything about the incident. I am ready to die,” he added.

Also paraded were three women, Abibat Oyesanya, Morenike Shittu, Olubunmi Funke arrested for child stealing and kidnapping.

Funke who confessed to have sold her three-year old daughter for N280,000, said the money was used to off set her debt.

“I gave out my three-year old daughter to Abibat Oyesanya who is into local adoption business. She promised to allow me to visit my daughter once in three months.

“I am a prostitute. I started prostitution after my first husband sent me packing. So, I decided to give out my daughter to a woman who gave me N280,000. I used the money to offset my debt.

“The woman also requested for more children due to the increase in requests by those adopting children.

”That is why I kidnapped the baby girl in Bodija, Ojurin, Ibadan, and brought her to the buyer,” she narrated.

The state police commissioner said his command was poised to flush out criminals in the state.

He said the suspects were arrested as part of “ember months mop-up operations of the command.”

Also paraded were 10 suspected armed robbers, including a female robbery suspected arrested for allegedly terrorising Mowe-Ibafo.

The suspects were identified as Abiodun Rasaq, Saheed Adebayo, Omisore Kayode, Oyemomi Rasaq, Ridwan Moruf, Mohammed Adefemi, Bala Idris, Abeeb Rasheed, Fatai Abiodun and Bosede Oguntoye (female).

A pastor identified as Olotu Oluwakayode who allegedly diverted N17.8 million belonging to a complainant into his bank account, was also paraded..

Sack Threat: Kogi Workers Considers Mass Action Against Gov. Bello

The organised labour in Kogi State has threatened to call for a mass action against Kogi State Government if it continues to handle the welfare of workers and the entire citizenry with careless abandon.
The Secretaries of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Comrade Olakunle Faniyi, Trade Union Congress, Comrade James Kolawole and their Joint Public Service Negotiating Council counterpart, Comrade Isa Abubakar gave the threat in Lokoja.
The organised labour said workers could no longer contain the insensitiveness and callous attitude of the government against them inspite of the hallowing experience workers are going through in the hand of Yahaya Bello administration.
They said the recent directive issued by the state Commissioner of Education, Dr Sunday Tolorunleke urging striking workers to resume or face sack gave Kogi State government away as the most insensitive government in the history of Nigeria.
The organised labour maintained that the death of Edward Soje, who the Head of Civil Service Mrs Deborah Ogunmola confirmed in a statement that the government is owing nine months salaries at the time he committed suicide, and others also dying silently due to nonpayment of salary would have been enough for government to show compassion and for once commiserate with the organised labour for loss of their loved ones and not a sack threat.
The organised labour therefore called on the entire workforce of Kogi State to ignore the threat of the government and be prepared to come out in their large numbers in the proposed mass action to tell the government that power actually lies in the hand of the people and that Yahaya Bello and any other persons in position of authority are only custodians.
They urged workers to remember that government threatened them not join and they joined the strike, threatened no-work no-pay and you ignored them and now they have come with their antics of mass sack which has no basis in the civil service law and other extant laws in the country. So, be bold enough to ignore this threat of sack.
According to the statement, “any attempt to return to work as threatened by government will mean surrendering our freedom as government has refused to accord us our rights as enshrined in the Constitution and international statue books.
“The organised labour therefore asked government to explain to the people of Kogi State what it has done with the statutory allocation of 4.2 billion naira it received in the month of September 2017.
“For the avoidance of doubt therefore, it is the right of workers to embark on strike when their employers have failed to meet with the terms of employment and therefore the principle of ‘no-pay-no-work’ also applies.
“The organised labour commiserate with the family of Late Edward Soje who the state government has confessed owing nine months salaries as at the time he committed suicide and many others out there daily loosing their loved ones because of nonpayment of salaries.
“We wish the entire workforce God’s guidance and protection as we continue the struggle for collective emancipation of our people and generation yet unborn in the hands of tyrants.
“The strike continues indefinitely!”

Yahaya Bello is ‘Killing’ Kogi Civil Servants: Governors Ranking

Kogi governor, Yahaya Bello is hardly ever in the news for the right reasons. If he’s not owing salaries, he’s being alleged to be the mastermind of an assassination attempt on Kogi West senator, Dino Melaye, or worse still justifying his non-payment of salaries.
Bello, who is currently Nigeria’s youngest governor keeps playing to the gallery, especially regarding the plight of workers in the state. Since Bello assumed office, workers in the state are yet to receive their salaries in full, without being owed for a month or the other.

Reps Investigates Non-payment of Salaries in Kogi

The House of Representatives has mandated its Ad Hoc Committee on Bail-out Funds to investigate non-payment of salaries of Kogi workers and report back within one week.
The House also mandated the Central Bank Of Nigeria (CBN) to within one week report and explain the utilisation of Salary Bail-out Fund given to states.
The directives followed a unanimous adoption of a Motion of Urgent National Importance moved by Rep. Sunday Karimi (Kogi-PDP) at the plenary presided by the Speaker, Mr Yakubu Dogara on Tuesday.
Moving the motion, Karimi said in spite the federal statutory allocation, salary bail-out funds and Paris Club refund received by Kogi Government, non-payment of state and local government workers salaries lingered.
He said Mr Edward Soje, a Director in the Kogi Civil Service Commission committed suicide for not being able to meet his obligations as a father and a husband.
The legislator said the deceased took his life after his wife was delivered of a set of triplet at an Abuja hospital last week.
The lawmaker explained that the late senior civil servant was being owed 11 months salary which made it difficult for him to meet his responsibilities.
According to Karimi, the situation of Soje is the lot of the majority of the civil servants and pensioners in the state.
He expressed concern that the state government had opposed to and refused any authority to investigate the non-payment of staff salaries.
According to Karimi, if nothing is immediately done about the situation in Kogi, more civil servants who were frustrated will commit suicide.
In her contribution, Rep. Nnkiruka Onyejeocha (Abia-PDP), she said it was sad for parents who worked for kogi government go several months without pay.
Onyejeocha called on legislators to support the motion and urged the committee to treat the matter with high speed.
Rep. Jimoh Olajide (Lagos-APC) commended the mover of the motion for the courage to speak for the people of Kogi.
He said the function of government was basically to ensure the welfare and security of the people.
According to Olajide, a situation where civil servants are committing suicide, nobody knows what is next.
The lawmaker, who advised the three tiers of government to be considerate and just, urged Nigerians not to commit suicide, no matter the difficulty.
The Hose urged the Federal and State as well as Local Governments to prioritise payment of salaries.

We Have Published Everything You Need to Know, Kogi Govt. Tells Reps

Kogi State Government has told the House of Representatives it has published everything it may need to know about its bailout funds, Paris Club Refund and salary payment updates.
Addressing journalists shortly after the NGF Media Conference in Abuja, Director General on Media and Publicity to the Kogi State Governor, Kingsley Fanwo said the state has acted transparently by publishing all its receipts and expenditures in the national dailies.
“As a government, we have high regards for the House of Representatives as an institution. But the House should be conscious of people who take political battles to the floor of the Green Chambers. The respected institution should not be dragged into the political vendetta of self-serving politicians.
“The Kogi State Government met a civil service that was a cesspit of corruption. The civil service reforms started with the staff verification exercise and we have graduated to the stage of digitalization to ensure punctuality, efficiency and discipline in the system.
“The bulk of staff cleared of any wrongdoing has been paid up till July 2017 while the outstanding two months are being processed for payment alongside the arrears of those recently given pardon by the Governor and returned to the payrolls.
“As a government, we are pained that Mr. Edward Soje died in controversial circumstance. Government values the lives of the citizens. We are not prepared to play politics with the life of a human being.
“The initial story was that the deceased was owed 16 months salary arrears. It was later revealed that he was paid up till December 2016 when the verification exercise showed he falsified his age. He was later pardoned and scheduled for payment.
“To blame the State Government for his predicament is therefore the height of moral deficiency and injustice to facts. Government has moved to ensure his family doesn’t suffer as we await the final report of police investigations into his mysterious and pathetic death.
“We have published salary arrears paid to each worker since the inception of the present administration to silence the mischief makers whose only slogan is non-payment of salaries.
“Government cares about the welfare of the citizenry and non-payment of salaries is not only an unjust act but immoral and irresponsible. We are a responsible government”.
Fanwo urged Hon. Sunday Karimi to avail himself of the facts about events in Kogi State in order not to mislead the Honourable House into taking wrong decisions.
He assured the people of Kogi State that government will continue to protect their interests as well as make Kogi better than it met it

Leave Ex-Gov Ibrahim Idris Out of Your Woes, PDP Chides Kogi Governor

Idris constructed Lokoja- Ajaokuta road, a federal project, which refund of N12bn was recently paid to Gov. Bello.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kogi State has said it is befuddling how the Governor Yahaya Bello administration is still able to find a voice in the midst of the bedlam and hardship that its “clueless policies has fostered on the unsuspecting good people of Kogi State”.
In a press statement signed by party’s Director for Research an Documentation, Achadu Dickson, PDP said the recent allegations made by the state government against former governor Ibrahim Idris stands truth on its head.
Achadu said the former governor led one of the most successful administrations ever known to the people of Kogi State.
“Once again, and for the umpteenth time, attention seekers and barefaced liars are on the prowl in the Confluence State. After an unsuccessful attempt by government to politicize and sweep under the carpet the inalienable agitations by workers in the state to demand for the payment of their salary arrears ranging from 2- 22 months, the Yahaya Bello administration turned its discredited propaganda machinery against former Governor Ibrahim Idris.
“In their latest antics, Kingsley Fanwo Director General, Media and Publicity to Governor Bello described the former governor as a failed politician and accused him of non-performance while in office. The only evidence adduced for the tag is the often recycled claim that Idris did not extend electricity to Abejukolo his ancestral local government headquarter. They are also unhappy, that the opposition People’s Democratic Party, PDP is putting its acts together ahead of the imminent victory in 2019 general elections. They accused Idris of being the arrow head of the party’s reconciliatory moves in the state.
“It beats the imagination of right thinking humans, how the Bello administration is still able to find a voice in the midst of the bedlam and hardship that its clueless policies has fostered on the unsuspecting good people of Kogi State. But, being that as it may, we wish to clarify as follows:
“The brush of failure with which Idris’ traducers sought to tar him stands truth on its head. At the risk of sounding immodest, Idris led one of the most successful administrations ever known to the people of Kogi State. The International Market; the Specialist hospital; Confluence Stadium; Greater Lokoja Water scheme, housing estates in Otokiti, Ganaja and in the 21 Local Government Areas; Dualisation of all major roads in Lokoja, construction of about 2,000 primary school blocks of four classrooms each; massive infrastructure development in the rural areas are some of the legacy achievements of that golden era that people will not forget in a hurry.
“In addition, the political and financial support Idris gave to the State University, Anyigba  ensured the accreditation of all its 29 programs in 29 months by the National Universities Commission, NUC. In 2012 when Idris left office, the university was the best among its peers in the whole country. It is also instructive that Idris constructed Lokoja- Ajaokuta road, a federal project, which refund of N12bn was recently paid to Gov. Bello. Needless, to say that a failure could not have attained such enviable records.
“When Idris defeated an incumbent and took over power in May 2003, he inherited unpaid leave bonuses and two months salary areas. He cleared all within a few months of assuming office. He also implemented relativity and a new minimum wage, making civil servants in Kogi State among the best paid in the country and the envy of all states in the North-Central. That is not all. In all his years in government, salaries, allowances, bonuses and emoluments were paid as and when due.
“Non payment of salaries which today is the signature of the Yahaya Bello maladministration was an aberration in the days of Ibrahim Idris in power. The most unfortunate thing however, is the fact that Bello’s so called ‘New Direction Movement,’ has proven incapable of a simple task of ascertaining or admitting the extent of its liabilities to the workforce.
“Alhaji Ibrahim Idris brought integrity, seriousness, fairness, prudence and equity to governance. Projects were sited and executed on the basis of needs and not whimsically on a chauvinistic consideration of the governor’s place of birth or proximity to same. Whereas the claim that Abejukolo lacked electricity during Idris’ tenure is completely untrue, his, was far from the nepotism in place in Kogi state today. We state emphatically that Abejukolo had light all through the period Idris was Governor. The people of Abejukolo are alive, and Fanwo’s haste to rewrite history with blatant falsehood cannot fly.
“It should be worrisome that one of the earliest projects embarked upon by Bello was the construction of the road to Agassa, his village. Sadly, the road is on the verge of being abandoned today.
“Fanwo’s claim that Idris gave contracts to one of his children and mismanaged N10bn monthly are tales from the pit of hell. All through the period Idris was in office, the highest allocation to the state was N3bn. The funds were prudently managed to record the landmark achievements of that era. It is instructive that although Bello have been collecting an average of the same N3bn monthly since he became Governor, he has frittered it away in loose living.
“We challenge Fanwo to either disclose the name of the son that got contract running into billions of Naira under former Governor Idris and other details or keep silent forever more. Indeed, it remains a mystery how a so called ‘Evangelist’ has so conveniently adopted ‘lying’ as second nature.
“Ibrahim Idris, Failed politician? Something must be terribly wrong for anyone to describe Ibro in such words. Let us check the facts. In his first outing in partisan politics in 2003, Idris won the governorship ticket of an opposition party, and proceeded to win the general election, leaving a major casualty in an incumbent whose love for power was extra-ordinary. He won re-election in 2007. Even when the election was annulled in 2008, on a rather technical ground that a candidate was unjustly excluded from the poll, Ibro again won the rerun election landslide, and distinctively governed the state for Nine years. He is the only Nigerian, living or dead who has accomplished such feat. He did not stop at that. After completing a statutory two terms in office, he led his party to another election victory on Dec. 3rd, 2011 and handed over power to a candidate of his choice, as his successor.
“Conversely, the only election in which Yahaya Bello stood as an aspirant, was far from being a success, as he did not even scale through the qualifiers. He was given a bloodied nose, in the 2015 All Progressives Congress, APC primaries in which he came a distant second to the late Prince Abubakar Audu. Now, as a governor (appointed, stray or circumstantial) Bello has demonstrated gross inability to inherit a political structure, let alone building one.
“Certainly, Fanwo’s tirades against Idris are at best the hallucinations of a confused mind. In any case, the longest day has an end. The current jamboree will soon be over, and Bello with his band of e-politicians will be required to face the will of the people. Then, we will know who a failed politician is.
“It should be noted that no amount of nitwit attacks will discourage Alhaji Idris from the task of ensuring good leadership in the state. He is a citizen that values his freedom of speech and association. As an elder statesman who has the interest of the masses at heart he will not be intimidated by those who are afraid of their own shadows. Those who live in a glass house, must be wary of throwing stones. Gov. Bello should call his attack dog to order, and halt this open desecration in the village square,” he said.
Achadu urged Governor Bello to role up the sleeves and get to work.
“He should find ways of paying workers salaries rather than dissipating energy looking for a fight. We advice him to leave Ibrahim Idris out of his woes. A word, as they say, is enough for a wise”

Kogi: Many Workers, Pensioners Have Died Due to Non-payment of Entitlements – NLC

The Nigeria Labour Congress ( NLC ) on Sunday appealed to workers in Kogi State not to see suicide as a way out of the current hardship imposed on them as a result of non-payment of their salaries.
The state Chairman of the NLC, Mr Onu Edoka, who made the appeal in Lokoja warned the workers against taking extreme actions because the tough time would soon be over.
Edoka, who was reacting to the suicide of a director in the state, Mr Edward Soje on Oct. 16 as a result of financial hardship, insisted that taking one’s life should not be an option.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the deceased’s wife has yet to be informed of the tragic death of her husband.
A source close to the family said a team of pastors and relations who visited her at an Abuja hospital to break the news were advised by the management against it due to her state of health.
Edoka, however, told NAN that many workers and pensioners had died due to non-payment of their salary and pensions by the state government.
According to him, many workers in the state have had their ailments aggravated as a result of lack of salary.
He said that high blood pressure and diabetes had become common among them.
Edoka said that the organised labour had started compiling statistics of workers and pensioners that have lost their life in the last one year, adding that figures of victims would soon be made public.
Edoka appealed to relatives, friends, religious organisations and good spirited individuals in and outside the state to come to the aid of the workers to stem the tide of untimely deaths.
The NLC Chairman again called on President Muhammadu Buhari to come to the aid of workers in Kogi State by sending foods, drugs and other relief materials to them through the National Emergency Management Agency.
He also pleaded with the presidency to set up a fact finding committee to come and ascertain the true situation of things with workers in the state.
The Chairman expressed displeasure with the state government for taking to the pages of newspapers to publish the names of workers and their salaries.
He explained that the figures quoted by the government was not correct and urged the governor to invite the workers to the negotiation table.
Also a statement jointly issued by the NLC and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) described the publication of workers names and salary figures as a wrong step.
“The security implication of this very wrong step is that criminals could get hold of this document and begin to trace the workers whose names government has published.
“Workers are walking the streets of Lokoja like beggars because their salaries and allowances have not been paid for a period of three to twenty-two months by the government,“ the statement said.
The statement signed by Mr Olakunle Faniyi and Mr Kolawole James, state secretaries of NLC and TUC respectively called on the state government to publish the names and the amount being owed cleared workers and pensioners in the past 21 months.
The unions expressed shock on the death of Soje and prayed God to grant his family the fortitude to bear the loss.

Edward Soje: Kogi Director Who Committed Suicide Had Partial Stroke – Police

The Kogi State police command on Monday claimed that the director in the state civil service, Edward Soje, who committed suicide last week had a partial stroke before he died.
The command, however, said it would conduct a comprehensive autopsy on the body of the deceased to ascertain the particular cause of his death.
Addressing newsmen on Monday,  the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Kogi state command, Williams Aya, said the command has decided to conduct an autopsy to ascertain what actually led to his death.
He said a report received from the Division Police Officer (DPO) where the case was first reported showed that Sodje was suffering from partial stroke, following which he was on drugs.
Aya, upon further probe, however, said there was no medical report or document to back up the claim as it was only through an investigation conducted by the police.
When asked further how it was possible for a stroke patient to climb a tree and hang himself, the PPRO said the investigation was still ongoing.
The late Soje’s body was last week Thursday found hanging on a tree beside Mammy market at the Maigumeri housing the Nigeria Army Command Records, Lokoja.
The incident happened few days after his wife gave birth to triplets in a hospital in Abuja after 17 years of marriage.
Aya noted that as at the time the military found his body hanging on a tree, there was no suicide note on him that would have explained the circumstances of his death.
The police image maker that investigation has commenced and very soon they will get to the root of the matter.
The late civil servant took his own life following what family sources called series of financial challenges as he was said to be owed 11 months salary.
But the state government said he was only owed nine months as he was last paid in December last year, according to the Head of Service of the state, Deaconess Deborah Ogunmola.
According to her,  Soje continued to receive his salaries till December, 2016 even while the Staff Screening and Verification Exercise was ongoing.
She said his salary was stopped after proof emerged that he falsified his age records.

Suicides and The Society

The problem about suicide is that one makes a permanent, irreversible, irrevocable treatment of a temporary problem, but still it is becoming a trend in Nigeria. When one is suicidal, they just want to be out of their current situation or their miserable lives, and they see death as the escape route!
The annoying situation after someone has taken their own life is the speculations people make about why he did it and why she did it. Suicide isn’t that straightforward, it is complex. You do not know the conscience of a dead person so you cannot assume they did it because of this or that.
About the civil servant who committed suicide in Kogi, it was reported he was owed 11months salary and people are now speculating that because of that, he committed suicides barely 10days after his wife of 17years gave birth to a set of male triplets (which should be something of great joy, considering the circumstances).
Reports also has it that he sold his properties amounting to millions due to hardships…. Anyway let me spare you the details. But my point is, the whole thing is not adding up. I refuse to believe he committed suicide because of unpaid salary arrears. The man left suicide note, and he was very vague, didn’t imply it was because of hardship or whatever specifically.
I also understand people are looking for anything to criticize the Kogi state government, and will easily join the bandwagon of “he committed suicide over unpaid salaries” without necessarily examining the facts.
When you take your life immediately after a crisis, everyone attributes your suicide to that one incident notwithstanding the fact that you could have been plotting your own death months prior to the crisis that pushed you over the edge. But nah, society has a very narrow understanding of depression.
This few days I’ve been hearing a lot of things about suicide and most of the people that speak about it don’t seem concerned at all, some of them even go as far as saying ; “those that attempt suicide are just cowards, attention seeking and selfish.”
The Black society can’t and will probably never understand mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety. So no, talking to someone in the black family will not help. Trust me. Have you seen how black families treat kids who’ve survived a suicide attempt?
Let me tell you what happens after you attempt suicide and fail. First, you wake up in a hospital confused, disoriented and nauseas with a pipe in your penis. After clearing your mind and realising you’re still alive and in a hospital instead of heaven or hell, you note your immediate family all staring at you and happy to see you awake.
Then the casual talk starts and you assure everyone you’re okay and they leave. After that, your vitals are checked and you’re monitored for a few days and off you go – home. The one place where everyone can be honest. You get home and everyone assumes “he/she’s okay now,” bare in mind only your physical wellbeing was monitored in hospital, you’re still a mental-wreck. But nah, because mental-illness ain’t a thing in black society, once you’re out of hospital your suicide attempt is swept under the rug for some time – only till some people come over for intervention, normally elders or pastors. This is usually the period where your family gets sick and tired of your attention seeking stunts and you’re told the truth, the bitter truth.
All this when you’re still an emotional wreck, your family literally pushes you back into the pit that you’re not really sure you want to live. So what do you do? You suffer in silence because you understand that any talk of suicide will unleash words such as “next time, I’ll personally deal with you.”
So what do you do? You withdraw into yourself, you suffer alone. You’re back to square one. You’re back to plotting your own death but this time you fear something, no not death, failing. You fear failing to kill yourself once again over your prospective death. You find that your own escape (death) has now been turned into an instrument to torment you.
So tell me, how “speak to someone”, have actually spoken to someone? In reality it’s not that easy, just speaking to someone will not entirely help, it’s like drinking Aspirin for HIV/AIDS.
Depression is a serious mental illness that needs medical attention, the only way you can help a depressed friend is by telling someone. You, good friend, are not emotionally and mentally equipped to deal with a suicidal subject. So, when a friend of yours is suicidal, call the helpline for them and yourself instead of just passing the number along and thinking you’ve played your part.
So unless you’ve been in a suicide victims shoe or been suicidal, stop speculating… Mental illnesses are complex because the human brain and psyche are complex too. You might say you’d never kill yourself today and kill yourself the next day. No one gets born knowing they’ll kill themselves one-day, it all happens so fast.
Remember, when it comes to suicide, you never really know who is ‘playing’ or who will actually do it. So take every suicide joke serious, those are the signs. No one wakes up and decides enough is enough, I’m taking my life today. Victims plan their death for days, months or even years all the while leaving clues in the form of cries of help but we miss them or ignore them and when they’ve taken their own life’s we claim they are selfish.
