English side Everton could face a heavy Uefa disciplinary action after a brawl between Ronald Koeman’s side and the Lyon players in Thursday’s 2-1 Europa League defeat against the French Ligue 1 giants. The Merseyside outfit face a Uefa probe after the sickening scenes, involving players, and fans in a Europa League matchday three game. The second-half brawl started when Toffees captain Ashley Williams' arm smash into Lopes’ stomach, sending him crashing into advertising boards.
He twice hit Lopes in the face, while Williams threw punches and striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin grabbed defender Kenny Tete by the throat.Even under-fire boss Ronald Koeman would not condemn Williams or his players.
He said: “There was a certain irritation in that moment by Ashley.“He is a player who hates losing and cannot deal with a lot of disappointments.“I think the mistake was also by the referee because they made a lot of theater and he did nothing. Fekir was on the floor diving ten times and did not even get a yellow card. That grew our irritation.”The referee from Holland, Bas Nijhuis only booked Williams and Lyon’s Bertrand Traore for the fiasco.
